Medication Use in Youth With Autism and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

ObjectiveChildren with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may benefit from medication to treat a diverse array of behaviors and health conditions common in this population including co-occurring associated ASD, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) anxiety. However, prescribing guidelines are lacking research providing national estimates use youth ASD is scant. We examined nationally representative sample children ages 6 17 current diagnosis estimate the prevalence correlates psychotropic medication.MethodsThis study used data 2016 2017 National Survey Children's Health. estimated unadjusted rates multivariable logistic regression odds across 3 groups: those ASD-only, ADHD, ADHD-only.ResultsTwo thirds 11 three quarters 12 ADHD were taking medication, similar (73%) ADHD-only (70%) more than (13%) ASD-only (22%). Youth likely be for emotion, concentration, or behavior ADHD-only, nearly half took ASD-specific medication.ConclusionsThis adds literature on presenting recent, high drug among ADHD.
